SLM Limited was incorporated under the Companies Act 1993 on the 22nd day of July 1998. The original purpose was to offer shipping and logistics management services to the Fletcher Challenge Group, as contractors rather than as employees.  Three friends founded SLM becoming the original shareholders and directors.  Two remain involved.  Today SLM:

• has a combined experience in the shipping and distribution industry of over 75 years with six friendly, competent and loyal people in the team.
• acts as a shipper’s agent to locate and coordinate the best shipping solution. At the same time, SLM acts as a shipping line’s agent to identify and coordinate bookings. A true Win/Win/Win.
• works very closely with several shipping lines for both breakbulk and container shipments. SLM ships from all major load ports in New Zealand and to all major destination ports in Australia, Asia, The USA and Europe.  Some imports are also arranged, particularly from Australia.
• works closely with shippers in various ways. At one end of the pendulum, SLM provides the full logistics service from door to door. At the other end, SLM manages specific aspects only, for example, bookings from a wharf to wharf or CY to CY basis only, packing of export containers only, arranging fumigation only.
• primarily assists NZ sawmills and timber remanufacturers ship to Australia, USA, and the rest of the world in containers, bolsters and break-bulk. SLM also works with a few industries which have similar requirements to the timber industry.
• has shipped many “out of the ordinary” cargoes, including huge mining equipment and dump trucks, circus equipment, caravans, camper vans, truck and trailer units, pool shells and pleasure boats.

SLM, through its sister companies, Unit & Pallet Protection NZ Ltd and New Zealand Timber and Dunnage Ltd, provides expertise and materials in packaging and protection of breakbulk cargoes and the supply of packaging timbers.

In summary, the team at SLM are very seasoned in all areas of shipping and logistics services. They know most of the movers and shakers in the industry. They can provide a better and cheaper service to many shippers, or at least confirm that current shipping arrangements are very good!
